o2 Academy, Brixton

Mac DemArco - 12/06/26

Welcome to the weird and whimsical world of Mac DeMarco, photographed at Brixton Academy on a sold out final night in London on Friday.

Despite the indie singer-songwriter running his third consecutive night, DeMarco’s characteristically quirky energy did not seem diminished, instead keeping the venue on their toes despite a heavy chorus of cheers when asking if anyone had attended either of the previous two shows.

There’s a real sense of play visible from the largely-seated balcony, with an exuberant DeMarco turning his stage set-up into a playground of props and toys, whether gesticulating on top of an amp or swinging his Rapunzel-length mic lead around like a cowboy’s lasso. His unpredictability had the whole venue giggling, somehow still managing to get through a mightily impressive 29 songs across the evening.

Between the tracks, a cacophony of bizarre sound effects, strange noises and interpretive-dance-like movements flowed across and off the stage… Truthfully, the whole thing felt rather like a fever dream curated from the unusual mechanisms operating in Mac DeMarco’s mind, that we will only ever receive a brief glimpse into.

Mac DeMarco may be a risk hazard nightmare, treating his musical equipment more like a climbing frame, but his effervescently loveable presence made for a truly memorable show (even if Brixton’s health and safety team will be quietly pleased to see him move on).
